Get to Know You Monday (Vol. 2)

Our first volume of Get to Know You Monday was so much fun! We are one colorful group. If you missed the first post in this new series and want to share your favorite color or see what other shared, come on over here. I have declared you are never too late to join in.

Question: What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was young I dreamed of being a dancer.

The picture above is not me because I could not find one but below you will find the oh so sweet younger me. Wasn't I cute? he he (And notice the similar bun action going on.)

I danced throughout my younger years and also spent three of my four high school years in a dance club. By high school I was smart enough to know a career as a dancer was not likely. Instead, I had my heart set on being my father's secretary. He owned a successful business at the time and I thought he had a cool secretary so why not. I even took shorthand and typing classes to prepare myself. Graduation came and plans changed.

I went off to college to pursue a degree in psychology. I joined a dance club too! School and I never agreed with each other so I dropped out half-way through my first year. I returned home and began temping as secretary. (I also did the whole get marriage and start a family thing.) As the saying goes, "the rest is history." Twenty-six years later I am still a secretary; now referred to as an executive assistant.

I've held some interesting jobs as an executive assistant. The early years of my career were rather bland but in 2000 I landed a job in the entertainment industry working for a multi-billionaire as his personal assistant.

Being around that kind of money for six years and the perks that came with being in the entertainment industry did some soul damage. I began to feel entitled. In other words, I became spoiled.

I moved from the entertainment industry to the gift industry as a personal assistant to another man of wealth. He also happened to be a complete jerk. I have stories...many, many stories. My role was like what you saw portrayed in the movie "The Devil Wears Prada." Not only did I have his coat thrown on my desk, I had his dirty laundry thrown on my desk. It was just bad.

When I finally had enough I left a note on the jerky man's desk saying, "I quit!"

I now work for the kindest man I could ever ask to work for. There is nothing flashy about him (other than his kindness), the company or my role and I am okay with that. My role does allow me the opportunity to travel to nice places once or twice a year...hello Hawaii come September!

And I'm no longer the spoiled girl I once was. God meets all of my need (Philippians 4:19).

I wonder though, am I too old to take up dancing again?

[Sorry, this post ended up longer than I intend for these to be. I got caught up in the memories.]

Now it's your turn. What did you want to be when you grew up? Remember, if you have a picture you would like to share you can come share on my blog Facebook page. How about joining me in sharing a picture of you from your younger years? If you are inspired to write a post in response to the question feel free to share a link in the comments or on my blog Facebook page too.

  1. Beth,
I, too, wanted to be a professional dancer. I started early (age 5) taking dance lessons and danced all the way up through college (dance ensemble). If not a dancer, I would have settled for being a professional ice skater lol. I had the Dorothy Hamill haircut, but that's about where the similarities ended haha. I became a professional in the relocation industry, was a full time mommy, taught preschool and am now writing. Odd progression, but a road definitely blessed by God.
    Love and ((hugs)),

    1. I love that we shared a similar passion for dancing. I think you wrote about that once didn't you. I recall knowing this. :) I had a love for ice skating too but the ice also scared me. lol. Thanks for sharing, sweet friend. Love you and (((hugs))),

  2. Oh what fun this is! There were several things I wanted to be, a doctor, a teacher, mostly a mom. I went to college, majored in Psychology & minored in Early Childhood Development. I thought I was going to be a preschool teacher, but couldn't handle 12 3 year olds at the same time! LOL :) I worked throughout college and ended up settling into an office manager position for a career. It's kind of funny because my parents have been self-employed since I was 2, so I grew up helping my mom do all the things I currently do as my career. I guess the things I was good at (organization, writing etc.) were all things that shaped me into who I am today. It's so funny to think back... I was trying so hard to be something different, because I didn't think what I do is "good enough." I struggled seeing value in an office management position. Anyway, I love what I do, I'm good at it & I'm happy to not only do it for my career, but to do it for the business my hubby & I started together in 2012! :) (I think it's pretty awesome that you & I have the same career!! Love you friend!)

    1. Satin, I understand that struggle to see value in an our positions. When someone asks what I do for a living I am still guilty of responding, "I'm just an executive assistant." I dislike that I do that because I know the work I do is important to God and I shouldnt' devalue that work. Thank you for sharing. I'm looking forward to the time we will have together soon to share lots and lots of stories. Love you.

  3. Hmm, let's see I fancied myself a lawyer fighting the injustices of this world :) And a singer!! Thankfully God knew what I would be best at and it's not either of those! :)

I would love to hear some of your stories sometime...maybe soon!

  4. Because I had a wonderful 4th grade teacher I wanted to be a teacher. (Not so much anymore though, the public school system is not something I care to be involved in). I am an "Executive Assistant" now for a General Manger in a Wal-Mart Distribution Center. Loved your story. Thanks for sharing it!

  5. I went through several phases - a nurse, a teacher a secretary. But when I hit high school I decided I wanted to pursue music and teach violin. I got my degree in violin performance and am thrilled to still be living out that dream. As a homeschooling mom, I'm also the resident nurse, teacher and secretary in our home : ) I guess in a way, all my dreams came true!

  6. There were two things I wanted to be when I was growing up. A teacher, and a mother. In my senior year in high school, one of my elective classes was teacher preparation. We were allowed to go one period a day to another school and observe/help the teacher. Well, it was fun until I got transferred to a guy's class who was super jerky (maybe related to your boss???). And then, my best friend suggested that we just tell our teachers we had an assembly, and just go out for the hour and a half. Well, it was fun until we got caught. I can still remember being *dressed down* by our advisor. I had always been a goody-two-shoes, and a good student, so the things she shouted about my character really stung.

Anyway, after high school, I was sick of school, so the prospect of 5 years of school to become a teacher did not appeal. (The irony is that when I finally decided that I DID want a college degree, it took me 6 years! LOL!)

However, when I had my sons, my biggest dreams came true. And through teaching them, and being a constant classroom volunteer, I realized that in some ways I had indeed become that teacher that I had dreamed about.

Thanks for the memories, Beth. And NO! You are definitely not too old to take up dancing again. Follow those dreams!

    GOD BLESS!

    1. This is simply too much fun! I am absolutely loving getting to know you and the others who join us here better. I'm all smiles. :) As usual you have me laughing too. I chuckled over your super jerky comment. I tell you, there are not many people I would call jerky but my former boss...oh my. Btw, I had a moment of getting caught in high school too. It resulted in me being suspended for a week. Not one of my finer moments. Thank you for sharing, Sharon. I truly enjoy reading every word. And I appreciate the encouragement too. Much love. xoxo

  7. How fun to learn more about you, and see the pics from younger years. Love this!
I always, always wanted to be a teacher. I used to make my sister and her friends be my students. Everyone tried to talk me out of that career path, but I finally did become a teacher. It was wonderful and so much fun. I was also an elementary school librarian, my favorite job of all time. Once I got sick, I still was able to homeschool my children for a few years and that was wonderful. Teaching and writing curriculum for Sunday school was always a favorite pastime, as well. Those days are behind me now, but they provided many fond moments and memories. <3

  8. Beth, I love seeing your photos and reading more about you! Great question for today! I'm not sure what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I always had a dream of being a famous singer. :) I loved to sing and I still do, and that's what drew me to the Lord. I never really pursued it though. I'll sing when I'm asked to at weddings and funerals, and in the shower, of course. I'm just thankful God gave me this voice to be used for Him. That's famous enough. :)

  9. I love your pictures and loved reading this post! I, too, wanted to be a dancer when I was a young girl. I took some dance classes as a child and during college, and then I quit dancing altogether until I was in my thirties. Later, God resurrected that dream and I actually got a part-time job teaching ballet and tap to young girls for a few hours each week while my children were participating in classes designed for home-school students. That was a God-sent job for sure! I quit my part-time job as a dance instructor two years ago to focus on my writing. Only God knows what's next.

    Keep up the great writing!

    Blessings,
    Amy

  11. I wanted to be a teacher! Until college when I actually spent some time in a high school and decided that my high school days were over! :-) I had a number of administrative and sales jobs before becoming a minister. I was a preacher's kid so I never in my wildest dreams imagined being a minister. But God has different plans sometimes! Loved your pictures and your story, Beth. I think you should dance even now!

  12. I am really enjoying your Monday get-to-know-you posts! When I was younger, I wanted to be a singer and a nurser. I get the opportunity to sing on worship teams at church, of which I am very grateful for. Nothing fancy, no limelight or spotlight. I much prefer it that way. I did not meet my goal of becoming a nurse but I am thankful that God uses me in our healing rooms at church to lay hands on and be a vessel of healing to others. Blessings!

  13. I think my response shows the power of words spoken to the younger generation. I think I wanted to be a teacher but then one day I spoke in church when I was in high school at our easter sunrise service and one of the old ladies came up to me and said "I bet someday you are going to be a missionary." I think since that day I wanted to be a missionary BECAUSE someone thought I might be good at it. I ended up marrying a missionary kid and we were "old fashioned" missionaries to Thailand for a year before my husband entered the Navy. Now we consider ourselves unconventional missionaries to the military!!!

  14. Right from the start I wanted to be a teacher—the romanticized version of the one-room schoolhouse teacher! ;) As that was only possible in my dreams, I went to Bible College, worked at a missionary organization, got married and teach my children at home. Now I dream about what I want to be when I "grow up"!! ;)

  15. Hi Beth!

When I was a child, I wanted to be a Marine Biologist! I don't know why except I loved going to the aquarium! Then, as I grew and became a teen, I wanted to become a writer (hmmmm). But, covering both those possibilities was my desire to get married and have a family. So, I'd say I've been blessed! I have two goldfish, I write a blog and I'm happily married to my best friend...plus we have the blessing of having children. But, I also want to share that though I'm currently not "working" outside of the home, I have been an Administrative Assistant for many years! I have been an Executive Assistant, too! My Admin work has mainly been in the church but I have also worked in other places in this role. Most recently I was the Assistant to the Sr. Pastor and Pastor of Adult Ministries at our last church (before we moved). That was double duty but I loved it!! Oh, and as for having more things in common with you? Well, I have always loved to dance! I grew up dancing as my parents were dance teachers. In fact, that is how they met...My mom was my dad's teacher at Arthur Murray's Dance Studio right following WWII! Anyway, I could go on and on, but I'll leave you with the phrase that my dad said was written over the door at the studio the day he met my mom: "Walk in and Dance out..."

    Love, Joan

  16. Oh my soul, this is so fun, Beth! I would love to sit around the table with you and listen to your crazy stories!! Haha. :D I wanted to be a singer when I was little. I was Tina Turner for halloween one year…complete with wig. For realsies. I still have dreams of being a singer…but I can’t sing. Except in the shower or going down the road with all windows down and the music VERY loud. Then I can sing like nobody (literally, like nobody.) :P Ok, I love this. I’ll be coming back to check out and chime in. ;)

  18. Oooh... I wanted to be so many things really. And seriously! Archaeologist, psychologist, dancer, fashion designer (enrolled in fashion design college but didn't go!)... tried college twice to no avail. But always in my heart and soul I wanted to be a writer and started at about age 7. And that's what God knew and planted there. So happy to say I'm living what I was meant to be. :)

  19. I wanted to be a mom when I grew up. Really...that was what I dreamed about and imagined. I was so devastated when I was pregnant for the first time with twin baby girls...and I was unable to carry them long enough for them to live here on earth. Then I was blessed beyond imagining with my own three girls and a wonderful stepdaughter. I love being a mom. Wasn't quite as good at it as I imagined (taught me a lot about grace toward my own mother). But I feel a little lost with my girls all grown and mostly out of the house now. My beloved six-month-old granddaughter is a new joy, though. I also wanted to be a therapist, so I studied psychology too (Beth!) and added English after working in publishing for a summer. In many ways, I feel like opportunities have found me. Though I have been writing and editing for 30+ years now, it still feels like an evolution I love. And now the coaching I do with both college-bound students and adult writers combines both those degrees I got so long ago!!

    1. It's always wonderful to see you here, Elise. Thank you so much for sharing a bit of you with us. I understand the somewhat lost feeling with kids out of the home. While my youngest is still living at home, he is never home. The house is way too quiet these days. I'm patiently waiting for my oldest and his wife to make me a grandma!! I know that must be such a joy. How wonderful that you are able to utilize both degrees in what you are doing now.

  20. What a great idea Beth... I missed your first post, I have to go back and read it. Man if we could sit and have coffee and I could hear your entire story. What did I want to be in a nutshell hmmmm... a mom, then a physical therapist, then I became a mom so that was out... so I was left with a ton of credits and no degree, at one point I have pursued a history/political science degree, a psychology degree, a teaching degree, a human resources degree, and I'm now going totally away from it all wanting to do more than peruse a photography degree. What did I end up being... you guessed it a mom... homeschool mom. Ahhh if I would have juts stuck to my dreams. :-)

  23. Beth, I LOVE your heart, your site, your story! Thank you for sharing so freely. I think it would be awesome if you started dancing again! Oh, and I would have felt the exact same way - jealous - if my husband wrote that he missed beer (and not me!) But to him, missing you is the OBVIOUS. I have felt jealous of my husband's love and attention many times too. That post was really good for me to read and focus on celebrating his successes with him. I really appreciate your honesty. I wanted to be a medical doctor in Mexico and share Jesus with people when I grew up. I wanted to be a Missionary. Just typing that brings tears because it seems like my life has just been a big failure, but I know that isn't true and God is at work restoring me and redeeming all that was lost. Thank you for all your love, Beth.
